Photo Ready

The month of June has flown by and the blogging class I have been taking is coming to a close.
I have once again found Holly Becker of Decor8 blog's class so enlightening.  I have been instructed by Holly and other fabulous guest teachers such as Jeanette Lunde of Fryd and Design.  Without her inspiration, I probably would never have considered and e-magazine (which I now am!).  Also, I was already a huge fan of Nicole Bach of Making It Lovely, who showed me how to find balance in work and life and how to grow your blog and possibly make income from it (I hope to one day, thank to my supportive readers!).  Katrina Tan of the Pugly Pixel showed so many creative ways to feature photos in more interesting formats.  I will definitely start to practice these tips and integrate them into my blog.

Since my blog is largely visually based, I found a great benefit from these photo teachings.  I especially enjoyed Holly sharing some of her favorite photo apps for my iPhone that I have already started to use.  One of these apps is instagram, which I have been using for a while but not really for my blog.  I love the effects that you can do to the photos right off your phone to enhance them.

I added a few apps to my repertoire on Holly's recommendation such as Pic Stich. This app will combine two or three photos in various configurations:
Progress photos of a recent installation
I also like Labelbox, which will allow you to add fun labels to any photo:

I also picked up a photo booth app.  I chose a free one called photoautomat, which is a lot of fun!
My sister and I being goofy

Bottom line, I loved this class and would recommend it to anyone wanting to blog.  It has a great support community as well and I look forword t contiuing to get to know the other bloggers in the class.  I will soon be sharing a few new favorite blogs of mine that have come out of the class.

Let's Hear From You

Sometimes it's nice to get a change of scenery.
Tea on table with ipad and notes
This morning I took my work to a local cafe called Temple, where I can get a good cup of tea and free wifi.  I overheard a glowing recommendation for the cafe from a table nearby.  One lady was telling her friends, " I have never had a bitter cup of coffee here. Ever!"  (My local readers and Sacramento coffee enthusiasts should go and find this out for themselves!)
Tea display and window seat at coffee shop

Some of my "work" consisted of my blogging class that I mentioned before.  One of our tasks is to try something new in our postings.  We were given a list of ten option for ideas and I found I am already doing many of them.  There were a few, though, that I ave yet to try.

So.... I thought I would survey my readers to get some feedback from you!  I promise this one is short and sweet.  I love hearing from you, some of my regular commenters, but I would also love to hear from those who are just stopping by!  All comments are private, for my eyes only, so be as free as you like in your answers.  I appreciate your opinions very much!

Blogging Your Way 2.0

Holly Becker of Decor8 blog is at it again.  You may remember that I took her Blogging Your Way class in the winter of 2010 which majorly revolutionized the way I blog and the look of it.  She has decided to offer a follow up class that I just signed up for in the month of June.

I feel like I have been letting my beloved Design R blog get a little out of shape as a result of my business seeing growth (yay!)  However, Design R is one of my loves and I think it's time to put the running shoes on and get it back into shape!

Be looking for some life to be pumped back into this blog and some great changes as I get much cherished feedback from my classmates.

If you are interested in Holly's e-courses for your own blog, you can find out more here.

The Liebster Blog Award

I was just honored by Sarah of Monaco Interiors who gave me the Liebster Blog award.  Liebster, German for "beloved" or "dearest", is an award given to up-and-coming blogs that have less than 200 followers.  In turn, the nominees get to pass it on to their favorite Liebster award worthy blogs.  I had a great time gathering and reviewing my pick!  You must check them out:

1. Laura Neuman of PepperJack Interiors Blog - Laura is a fabulous designer in Granite Bay, CA who is in my local ASID chapter with me.  He blog touches on the wealth of inspiration and sophistication her designs are filled with.  One of my design faves and great sounding board for my own designs!

 2. DeAnna Mackensen of REDesign Interiors Blog - I have enjoyed watching the incredible DIY creativity of the up-and-coming designer in Yuba City, CA.  DeAnna works with me once a week as she is establishing her design business and experience.  I am constantly invigorated by her enthusiasm and out-of-the-box ideas!

3. Jordan Iverson of Jordan Iverson Signature Homes: The Blog - Jordan is my cousin and a fabulous builder in Eugene Oregon.  Jordan sets the cutting edge for his city by being one of the only builder to bring urban and modern to these northwest homes.  He is my go to guy for the latest in modern design.

4. Lori Crooks of The Chic Geek Blog - I met Lori through the Blogging Your Way class I took, given by Holly Becker of Decor8.  We were able to meet up at the last BlogHer convention which was so fun!  Lori's blog is always a great blend of personal life and style, food and design inspirations.

5. Sheri Shay Johnson of Designer Junk Finder is another fellow student from the BYW class I took.  I am endeared to her by her constant photos of her Standard Poodles, the type of dogs my family had growing up.  Aside from this, I also love seeng her great finds and many design inspirations.

Congratulations to all my nominees and a big thank you to Monaco Interiors!

Decorate Book Tour

Yesterday I made a trip down to San Francisco to meet and greet Holly Becker of the popular blog Decor8.  She has just come out with a book, appropriately named Decorate.  The Anthropologie store was hosting the event, providing a mood board presentation by Holly and Leslie Shewring.  Leslie authors the blogs Color Me Pretty and A Creative Mint. How can I resist the combination of some of my favorite bloggers in one of my favorite stores in one of my favorite cities??

Accompanied by a colleague, DeAnna Mackensen of REDesign, we made a day of it by hitting the San Francisco Design Center (more on that later) before making our way to Union Square to do a bit of shopping before the event.

We arrived at Anthropoligie to join the other bloggers and Holly Becker fans for a bit of refreshments and farmers market kettle corn before Holly went through the process of making a mood board.  She gave great advice on how to not get overwhelmed when you are out shopping for your home by making a plan via the mood board.

After the presentation, we chatted with fellow attendees, Holly and Leslie Shewring.

Both Holly and Leslie were teachers in the Blogging Your Way class I took in the Winter 2010 session.  The class led me to have much admiration for their creative abilities and mastership of blogging and design.  They are my creative gurus!

It was such a fun night!  I gathered a few inspirations just from being in the Anthropologie store!

Holly will be touring a few other cities on her book tour, she is in LA tonight.  If you don't have a chance to catch her in person, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Decorate, which is already in its 4th printing.  It's back ordered on Amazon but you may be able to snag a copy at your closest Anthropologie.

.....Or you can stay tuned for a special giveaway of a signed copy of Decorate that I picked up just for my readers!  Giveaway will be announced on Monday!  Have a great weekend!

BlogHer '11

Last weekend I jetted down to San Diego to attend BlogHer 11.  It was a wonderful weekend in one of the best California cities.  I was able to meet up with two blogging friends who author ChicGeek Designs and Be Healthy Well and Inspired
We toured the 100 sponsors booths, gathering tons of swag and free things I probably don't need.
I did win a free 5'x7' area rug from CarptetOne featuring carpet from Lees to my delight!  It actually was the one vendor that fit into my blog category!

I was also able to sit in on some fabulous sessions about blogging in your local community and blog design (you may see a few changes soon!)  Our keynote speaker on Saturday was the CEO of Pepsico Indra Nooyi, who was very inspirational in telling her story of how she got to where she is and the future of her company.

Amidst all the swag, I did receive some good giveaway items so stay posted for those!

I thought it was time to update my header on my blog to spruce things up a bit.  You like?

To celebrate this fresh new look I have decided to do a giveaway!

Well, today I have pulled out this lovely 100% cotton tan and aqua throw from Surya:

I'm making it super simple to enter to win:
Leave a comment with your name and email and you will be entered to win!  This is not limited to the US so international readers, comment away!  You have until Thursday June 16th to enter.  The winner will be selected using random.org and will be announced next Friday, June 17th.  Good luck!

What's Your Favorite?

I found a great new blog tool when I visited Heartfire At Home's Blog.  It's called Linky Tools and allows readers to post links in my blog post.  She varies the topic each month and this month she asked for submissions of favorite blog posts from the month of November.

I thought for my first linky party I would do a similar theme and ask for you submission of your favorite blog post from October or November.  This can be your own blog or one you like to follow,or even from Design R.  What a great way to discover or rediscover new blogs!

My submission was the More Victorian post I did in November.  I had fun specifying the colors.  I got an update from the painter that the house is coming along great and looks fabulous!  I will be sure to post photos when it's finished.

So what's your favorite post from the last 2 months?

Writing with Design in Mind

Today I am featuring my first guest post from Heather Spiva of Writer's Mana. Enjoy!
----
I have this passion for writing. You know, stories, articles, fiction, poetry. So I’m sure you’re wondering: How can she possibly relate writing to interior design?

In all honesty, I was stumped when first presented with the idea of guest blogging for a designer. Some designers have the ability to write, but not all writers can design.

Then I realized, after thinking about it, that a well-designed room has a story to tell. And that these stories, the rooms or buildings, set the background information for most books. The design ends up being critical to specific scenes or dialogue because it sets the mood and temperament, and reveals detail necessary for a quality story. This is accomplished through any and every thing: the color of the walls, the style of the protagonist’s favorite chair, texture of a bedroom duvet or even the run-down fifties-era kitchen. These descriptions all have to do with design.

How is this true? Well, look at your favorite book-turned-movie and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. Take Harry Potter’s less than perfect sleeping conditions at his Uncle and Aunt’s house, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and watch how it comes alive with just a few words: “Harry found a pair [of socks] underneath the bed, and after pulling a spider off one of them, put them on. Harry was used to spiders because the cupboard under the stairs was full of them, and that was where he slept.” The mixture of socks and spiders is what sets the scene. The set decorator (to me, also known as an interior designer) has to find the creepiness factor and does this by splashing the room with cobwebs and darkness. This is design and literature meshed to perfection.

Mystery writer, Michele Scott writes this in her novel, Murder Uncorked. “The furniture was done in distressed leather and warm woods. The walls were painted a gold tone, and a Navajo rug hugged the hard wood floors.” Michele’s writing and interior design descriptions make me want to go there … and live their too! Writing and design blend well because together it sells the story; it makes the scene and characters not only come to life, but through these details we feel, smell and hear everything we read.
With that thought, I have to inform you of something amazing. What if you could see this idea of design and literature in action? What if you could go to a place with rooms designed for specific authors, mixed with elements from their works, from Virginia Wolfe to Mark Twain or Tolkien and Emily Dickinson? What if this was on oceanfront property and you could not only visit this place but stay in it? At Sylvia Beach Hotel, in Nye Beach, Oregon, you can. This is a book-lovers hotel, inside and out. There’s even a restaurant called “Table of Contents,” and a library on the third floor that takes up the entire west wing. It’s literature and design together!

Take Agatha Christie’s room for example, it has a private deck, fireplace and ocean view. As soon as you’re a guest in this room, you can read from Christie’s books and even find clues from each mystery hidden somewhere in the room. Hello? This is incredible. And it proves that writing about interiors, and even matching it with the author and their writing, not only creates great literature but also creates unforgettable characters and authors.

Writing and design are relatable and necessary to each other. I think without it, books would pretty awful stuff to read. And for me, if the design aspect were to disappear, it would signal the end times.

Trying Something New

It's always exciting to try something new.  My sister's puppy, pictured here, is experiencing nothing but new things every week of his new life and is loving every minute.  Present him with a new toy and he usually approaches it cautiously but is soon tumbling around on the floor with it.  I feel like that is me with the subject of guest blogging.
Guest blogging has always been something I've been interested in but never really thought about how to start doing it.  I am cautiously approaching it now.  In the Blogging Your Way class by Holly Becker from Decor8, the subject is broached but I thought maybe I was too new of a writer or too small of a blog to think about it.  However, I have always enjoyed when the blogs I follow feature guest writers because I usually discover a new person I want to follow.
Thanks to the opportunity provided by my sister, Heather Spiva of Writer's Manna, I am featured today on her blog with my post entitled, Designing Writer.  She recently was a guest blogger for someone else and she has only just begun her blogging career!  So with much encouragement from her, I submitted an appropriate post to her "writer" audience, bridging my subject with hers.  I hope you enjoy!
On the flip side, I am now accepting entries for guest bloggers in the month of September.  If you are interested in writing on the subject of interior design, please email me your post to rwarddesign@gmail.com.

French Essence

One of my favorite blogs to read is French Essence.  This Australian living in England and the south of France captures beautifully the joys of living in these places.  Since I also lived for a time in the south of France, the descriptions of southern french living tug at my heart strings and conjure up memories of my fabulous time there.  I read today's post about the french supermarket and felt I just had to share this magnificent writing with you.  It is these kinds of passions that she expresses that I, as an interior designer, strive to evoke from my clients in the newly designed spaces I have made for them.  Please visit French Essence here!

More on the "New and Improved"

Last month, I posted this about the improvements I have been making to this blog.  I have been taking a 7 week course called Blogging Your Way hosted by Holly Becker of Decor8 and co-taught with Leslie of A Creative Mint.  It was so helpful to learn tips from such successful bloggers and get feedback from all the students in the class.  (If you are interested, check back with Decor8 in August when the fall class is announced).  As you can see I have made massive changes to the blog even in the past few weeks!

Here are a few of the changes you may have noticed:

I added pages with links to them running below my new header.  Besides the standard "Home" page that I have had all along, I have added:

Portfolio
This page will showcase some of my interior design projects that I have highlighted in my blog and can also be seen at my business website: www.rwarddesign.com
Columns
Inspired from the class, I have started two monthly columns: 5 Favorites - a column where I post some of my monthly favorite things and Design:Sacramento - a column where I highlight some local businesses that I have found useful in my interior design business.

You may also notice that the blog template and colors have been adjusted as well as the header.  I feel like I have tweaked this blog into a good place now and I think it will be like this for a while.  However, I'm sure down the road you will find me craving some change, just like rearranging the furniture in a room.

Enjoy and let me know what you think!
